    Brief History of Place House

Many of us will have looked across the Percuil Estuary towards Place House and wondered about its history and maritime heritage. This booklet is based on local presentations made by Nigel in which he tells one of the most captivating stories ever told about the Roseland as secrets are unlocked from the past.

For those who appreciate Cornish legends and history, you will be able to take on board remarkable information about Place House and its integrated church of St Anthony. The story covers a period extending remarkably over 4,000 years including the bronze & iron ages, the first monastic settlements on the site, the naval exploits of the Spry family who have owned Place for the last 400 years, and the severe impact on the House and Estate caused by the two world wars. Also included are the fascinating recollections written by a descendant of the Spry family wholived at the House for the first 21 years of her life from 1924.

Nigel was born at Roseland Place and his mother was the daughter of Gwavas Spry. In the early 1980’s, he was employed at Mount Wellington at a time when the tin mines in the Carnon Valley were being reopened by two of the world’s biggest mining groups.
